HYKLERNE is a sprawling ensemble production at Betty Nansen Teatret, conceived by director Niels Erling and playwright Madame Nielsen as a loose, contemporary reimagining of Molière's classic comedy Tartuffe. The subtitle — Fraud, Love and Bitcoins – Very Freely Adapted from Molière's Tartuffe — signals the production's irreverent, wide-ranging ambitions.
The story weaves together the tale of a man who loses everything in a startup collapse, a woman who falls in love with a voice from a call centre, and a family that opens its home to a stranger. From these threads, the production builds a kaleidoscopic portrait of modern society — loneliness, financial precarity, crypto romance and the global economy of false promises.
The production moves across settings ranging from suburban living rooms and police stations to digital call centres and internet abysses, asking where the true hypocrite lies: with the cynical fraudster, the lonely customer, or a society engineered to profit from longing?
Performances run Monday through Friday at 19:30, with Saturday matinees at 16:00. The exception is Saturday 17 April, which carries an evening performance at 20:00.
