Created as a project designed for young audiences as well as adults, the exhibition invites visitors to think about public monuments, museums and shared memory, while questioning dominant narratives and the way they are handed down.
Young visitors explore the show through Malaika Ire, a princess and heroine who travels through time to meet her ancestors and learn about the history of her people. Following her, they move through places marked by the colonization of Africa and the Caribbean, the slave trade and the exploitation of natural resources.
A monument built in the princess's honour celebrates her adventure, while objects that belonged to her rest in the display cases of an imaginary museum. This raises questions about how Western museums preserve and present artefacts taken during colonial plunder.
Moving between reality and fiction, and between present-day statues and witnesses of the past, the artist encourages young people to think actively about how History is told and passed on to them.
