Dr Michael Maul presents a talk exploring what it means to uncover an unknown work by Bach — the conditions that make such a discovery possible and the consequences it brings.
On May 17, 2005, in Weimar, Maul discovered the previously unknown Bach aria "Alles mit Gott" ("All with God"). His account of the find is described as gripping, investigative in spirit, and worthy of a detective novel.
Maul is a researcher at the Leipzig Bach Archive and serves as artistic director of the Leipzig Bach Festival, placing him at the forefront of contemporary Bach scholarship.
The talk is part of the Off programme of the Festival International Bach Montréal 2026, held over café and croissants at the Off-Festival Bach venue on Boulevard Saint-Laurent.
